SOLIDWORKS TECH TIP: Mold Tip - Split a Non-Planar Face

Have you ever been designing a mold parting line or parting surface and found you wanted it to pass through a non-planar face? A fillet, for example.  How can you split that face easily?

Although there are a variety of ways to do it, some can be tricky to set up.  A quick and easy way is to use the SPLINE ON SURFACE (Tools > Sketch Entity > Spline on Surface) command. Use it to sketch the desired intersection on the face, then use SPLIT LINE (Insert > Curve > Split Line) with the Intersection option to split the face.

The new split can then be used for the parting line.

Note: 3D curves cannot be used to split a face.

Watch the video below to see this in action.
