How to recover from a VSTA 1603 installation error if S-056972 fails to correct the issue

To fix this issue, follow the below steps:

  1. Uninstall Visual Studio Tools 2005 for Application from Programs and features. (Control Panel > Programs and Features > Click on Visual Studio Tools 2005 for Application > Uninstall)
     

     
  2. Remove VSTA registry entries*
    *Export registry back up before making changes! (Right click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Export > save file to desktop)
  3. Start > Type "regedit" > Delete or rename the following keys:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VSTA
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VSTA (64bit only)
  4. Install the Visual Studio Tools Application manually from the prereqs folder found on the SolidWorks DVD or downloaded file set (documents/SolidWorks downloads/prereqs)
  5. Install SolidWorks (disable Antivirus)

works in 7x64 - only the 2nd branch to delete - is a little different. thanks!
